THE GAFFER Lets You Run a Struggling English Football Club From 1959 to 1989, and It Looks Like a 1985 Cassette Game

TL;DR: THE GAFFER is a football management game from Pitchwork Studios in Cardiff, Wales. You take over a Fourth Division club in 1959 and manage it for thirty years, up to 1989, in a game made to look like it loaded off a cassette in 1985. It launches this Friday, October 30, on Steam for Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck.

Aminin na natin: basketball ang hari dito sa Pinas. But if you love retro-looking games, or you’ve ever lost a whole weekend to a management sim, this one’s worth a look.

Thirty years, one small club

In THE GAFFER, you start at the very bottom: a Fourth Division club in 1959. From there, you live through thirty years of English football, all the way to 1989. The twist is that it’s not just the club that changes. According to the developers, the whole town lives those years with you.

The day-to-day is classic management sim territory. You balance sponsorship deals, ticket prices and player wages, all based on the economics of the era. Then you fight for promotion, or fight to avoid getting relegated.

The town remembers everything

What makes it stand out is the people around the club. Everyone you meet remembers what you said to them. Pub regulars and boardroom figures react to your decisions, and that feedback sticks around.

The studio’s own preview scenes set the mood nicely:

  • A Saturday match at the bottom of the Fourth Division, complete with an action replay of a full-stretch save
  • Two of the men who actually run the club stepping out of the pub at night, agreeing that the new manager will soon learn who’s really in charge
  • The local lads kicking a ball outside the club offices, sizing up the new boss
  • The regulars at Hooligans Manor, the local pub, who’ve already made up their minds about you

Parang local politics, pero football club ang usapan.

Made like it’s 1985

Visually, THE GAFFER is built to look like a home computer game from 1985, with a modern simulation running underneath.

That look comes from somewhere personal. Lead developer Sanwar Ahmed started programming in BASIC on an Acorn Electron, an ’80s British home computer, and the football management games of that era never left him. THE GAFFER is his attempt to bring that feeling back. Karamihan sa atin hindi naabutan ang cassette games, pero ramdam pa rin ang retro charm.

Here’s a detail for the student devs reading this: according to Welsh news site Golwg360, Sanwar is studying Computing at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and he set up Pitchwork Studios while studying. He originally built THE GAFFER for his own use, because he couldn’t find anything like it on the market.
