TL;DR: Remember playing Snake on your old phone? Polish solo dev Arkadiusz Włodarczyk turned it into an action roguelite called Snake: Gridbreaker. The free demo is on Steam right now, and Early Access opens on Tuesday, November 3.
Kung may lumang cellphone ka noon, alam mo ‘to. Before ML and CODM took over our phones, Snake was the mobile game. Eat the apple, grow longer, and try not to crash into yourself. Simple, nakakaadik, and a lot of us lost hours of class time to it.
Now that same formula is getting a serious upgrade.
What is Snake: Gridbreaker?
Snake: Gridbreaker is an action roguelite from Arkadiusz Włodarczyk, a solo developer from Poland. The core is still classic Snake: you move on a grid, you eat, you grow. But this time, your body isn’t just a liability. It’s part of your build.
According to Arkadiusz, you can build your run around:
- Head attacks, for hitting enemies head-on
- Tail effects, which turn your growing body into a weapon
- Shields, for when things get messy
- Movement, for players who live and die by positioning
Then there are cursed mutations. These give you big power at a real cost, so every pickup becomes a risk-versus-reward call. Classic roguelite tension ‘yan.
The builds can get wild. Your tail can burn, freeze, shock or attack enemies, your movement can turn into a teleport, a phase through danger or a high-speed charge, and you can even spend body segments to fire off class abilities. The current build packs five playable classes, six sectors, 16 levels and 68 upgrades and mutations, plus Gatekeeper boss fights.
And here’s the part that keeps it true to Snake: your own growing body is still the thing most likely to trap you. The longer and stronger you get, the less room you have to move. Same old Snake fear, bagong level.

Die, unlock, try again
Like most roguelites, dying ends your run. But each attempt also lets you unlock permanent upgrades, so even a failed run pushes you forward. Expect a lot of “isa pa” moments.
The game is old-school in another way, too. Its Steam page says it straight: there’s no tutorial, and there won’t be one. The dev says he believes in you. Kaya mo ‘yan, ka-PGN.

Arkadiusz, who has more than 20 years of experience behind him, also told us he found Pinoy Gaming Network through our story on the Pinoy solo dev who brought Filipino Dama online. Solo devs supporting solo devs. Ang ganda, ‘di ba?
When can you play?
The free demo is on Steam right now, so you can try it before you buy. Early Access opens on Tuesday, November 3, and the developer expects the game to stay in Early Access for about 6 to 18 months, depending on player feedback.
Pricing hasn’t been announced yet. On the Steam page, Arkadiusz says he may gradually raise the price as the game grows during Early Access, so getting in early will likely be the cheapest way to play. Add it to your wishlist to get notified when it goes live.
