This Week in Games (Oct 19–25): Final Fantasy Resonance, Switch Sports Resort, and Free Demos Galore

TL;DR: It’s a busy week, mga ka-PGN. Steam Next Fest opens with hundreds of free demos, Final Fantasy Resonance and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort both drop on Thursday, and One Piece: Grand Gourmet lands on Switch, PC, and mobile on Friday.

Sunday na, so here’s your quick look at what’s coming this week. Plan your wallet accordingly.

Monday night: Steam Next Fest opens

Steam Next Fest’s October edition runs from October 19 to 26. It starts at 10AM Pacific on Monday, which is 1AM Tuesday dito sa atin, so night owls get first dibs.

If you’ve never joined one, Next Fest is basically a week-long buffet of free demos for upcoming PC games. Walang bayad, just download and play. Devs also run livestreams, and some demos disappear once the fest ends, so try the ones that catch your eye early.

We already featured two Next Fest titles: the Tokyo-made deathmatch game KAREI and the indie Disbond. Check those out if you need a starting point.

Thursday, Oct 22: Final Fantasy Resonance

This is the big one for RPG fans. Final Fantasy Resonance is the first-ever HD-2D Final Fantasy, the same pixel-art-meets-3D style as Octopath Traveler. It’s built from the first story arc of the old mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt as a full console RPG with no gacha.

  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC)
  • Price: US$49.99 standard
  • Combat: Turn-based, with a turn-order timeline instead of ATB
  • Demo: Chapter 1 is free right now, and your save carries over to the full game

Kung naglaro ka ng Brave Exvius noon, this is a nice nostalgia trip. Kung hindi naman, it’s a solid entry point since you don’t need to know any older Final Fantasy to follow the story.

Also Thursday: Nintendo Switch Sports Resort

Switch 2 owners, Wuhu Island is back. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Switch 2 exclusive with 12 motion-control sports, including Tennis, Bowling, Boxing, Basketball, Golf, Archery, and Thumb Wrestling. There’s also Skateboarding using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, plus Power Cruising and Prop Plane.

It supports up to four players locally, so perfect ‘to for barkada nights or family bonding this Christmas season. One heads-up: Nintendo’s PH page notes that Nintendo Switch Online hasn’t officially launched in the Philippines yet, and online play needs it.

Friday, Oct 23: One Piece: Grand Gourmet

May mobile option din tayo this week. One Piece: Grand Gourmet is a restaurant management sim from Kairosoft, the studio behind Game Dev Story. You join the Straw Hat Crew and help Sanji turn a second Baratie into the best restaurant on the seas.

  • Platforms: Switch, Switch 2, PC (Steam), iOS, and Android
  • Price: US$19.99
  • Roster: Over 400 One Piece characters show up as staff and customers

If you’ve ever lost a whole weekend to a Kairosoft game, alam mo na ang mangyayari.

Which one are you getting?
