Subnautica 2 Is Finally Here — Everything You Need to Know Before You Dive In

After years of delays, a jaw-dropping corporate scandal, a $250 million lawsuit, and one of the most dramatic development stories in gaming history — Subnautica 2 is finally out today in Early Access. And yes, it’s available for free on Xbox Game Pass.

If you have no idea what Subnautica is, don’t worry — we’ll get you up to speed. And if you’re already a fan of the original, buckle up, because this sequel is a massive step forward in almost every way.

What Is Subnautica 2?

Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure game set on an entirely new alien ocean planet. Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment — the same team behind the beloved 2018 original — the game puts you in the role of a Pioneer whose colony ship, the CICADA, malfunctions en route to a new home. You crash-land on an alien world covered almost entirely by ocean, and from there, it’s up to you to survive, explore, and uncover the mysteries hidden in the depths.

If you’ve never played the original Subnautica, here’s the best way to describe it: imagine being stranded on an alien planet that is 90% ocean, with no weapons, no map, and creatures the size of buildings lurking in the deep. It’s terrifying, beautiful, and completely addicting all at once. The sequel builds on that foundation with bigger environments, better visuals, and — for the first time in the series — multiplayer.

What’s New in Subnautica 2?

4-Player Co-op — Finally!

The biggest addition in Subnautica 2 is cooperative multiplayer. You can now play as one of four pre-designed characters, with more characters and customization options coming throughout Early Access. You and up to three friends can explore the depths together, build shared bases, and take on giant alien leviathans as a team. Hindi ka na mag-iisa sa ilalim ng dagat.

One important note: solo worlds can be converted to co-op without losing progress — so if you start alone and want to bring friends in later, you can. Full cross-play between PC and Xbox is also supported.

The Tadpole Submersible

The launch version includes a Tadpole submersible for traversal — a compact underwater vehicle that lets you explore deeper biomes and cover more ground faster. Expect more vehicles to be added throughout the Early Access period.

Bigger, Stranger World

Subnautica 2 launches into early access with multiplayer, several biomes, along with creatures, craftables, and more. The alien ocean planet is described as vibrant and breathtaking, with long-forgotten ruins to explore and a planet that — in the developers’ own words — “might not want you there.”

Unreal Engine 5

The visual upgrade is immediately noticeable. Running on Unreal Engine 5, the underwater environments are stunning — glowing coral reefs, massive alien sea creatures, and deep dark trenches that genuinely make you hesitate before swimming further down.

The Wild Story Behind the Game

Kung gusto mo ng drama na parang teleserye, nandito na lahat.

In July 2025, publisher Krafton suddenly fired the three co-founders of Unknown Worlds — Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire — the very people who created the original Subnautica. It had come to light that the firings came months before Krafton was due to pay the development team a bonus worth up to US$250 million based on revenue targets that a release into Early Access would have helped achieve.

It gets worse. The lawsuit revealed that the plan to avoid the payout was created through the use of ChatGPT by Krafton’s CEO, Changhan Kim, after their legal team had warned him that the payout had to be made even if the founders were dismissed with cause.

The founders sued. And they won. In March 2026, a Delaware court reinstated CEO Ted Gill, with Krafton no longer listed as publisher following the ruling. The court also extended the $250 million earnout window to September 15, 2026, after finding Krafton fired the studio’s leadership specifically to avoid paying the bonus.

Today, Subnautica 2 sits as the most-wishlisted title on Steam — a testament to how much the gaming community rallied behind Unknown Worlds throughout this entire ordeal.

When Can You Play It?

Subnautica 2 enters Early Access with a single global unlock at 8:00 AM PDT — which translates to 15:00 UTC across Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, and Xbox Series X|S.

For Pinoy gamers, that means it unlocks at 11:00 PM tonight (Philippine Standard Time, May 14).

So if you’re planning to do a late-night dive session, prepare your setup — it’s going live tonight.

How to Get It — and How to Get It FREE

Option 1: Buy it on Steam or Epic Games Store
Subnautica 2 is available to purchase on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Early Access pricing is lower than the final release price, so buying now locks in the cheaper rate. Note: the price will increase once the game leaves Early Access, so this is the best time to grab it if you’re planning to buy.

Option 2: Xbox Game Pass (FREE!)
Subnautica 2 arrives Day 1 on Xbox Game Pass — both on PC and console. Kung Game Pass subscriber ka na, wala kang additional na babayaran. Just download and dive in.

This is easily the best value in gaming right now. If you don’t have Game Pass yet, this might just be the reason to finally subscribe.

Should You Play It Now or Wait?

This is an honest question worth answering, especially since it’s Early Access.

Play now if:

  • You’re already a fan of the original Subnautica
  • You have friends to play co-op with
  • You have Xbox Game Pass and it costs you nothing
  • You want to experience the world early and help shape its development with your feedback

Wait if:

  • You prefer complete, polished experiences
  • You’re sensitive to bugs and missing features
  • You’re on PS5 or Switch 2 — PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions remain unconfirmed at the time of writing

Unknown Worlds plans to expand the game through Early Access updates, with the full 1.0 release expected roughly two to three years out. So there’s plenty of time to jump in — but the longer you wait, the more content you’ll have to enjoy when you do.

PC System Requirements

Curious if your PC can handle it? Here’s what you’ll need:

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1080 / AMD RX 5700 (8GB VRAM)
  • Storage: 30 GB available space

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 / AMD RX 6800 XT (10GB VRAM)
  • Storage: 30 GB SSD

Para sa mga may mid-range PC, ang minimum specs ay katumbas ng isang 2018-era mid-range build — so hindi naman kailangan ng sobrang powerful na machine para makalaro.

Final Thoughts

Subnautica 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2026 — and after everything Unknown Worlds went through just to get it here, there’s something extra satisfying about finally being able to play it. The game surpassed 5 million wishlists on Steam heading into launch, and the community hype is very real.

Whether you’re a veteran of the original or a complete newcomer, tonight is a good night to dive in — literally.

Maglaro na tayo. The deep awaits.
