So That Happened – My Take on the September State of Play

Okay, full disclosure: I did not wake up at 6 AM to watch this live. I have a day job. What I did instead was open three tabs at lunch on Thursday, make myself a very strong coffee, and watch the replay while half-listening to my officemates argue about whether Jollibee or Chowking has the better burger steak. (Jollibee. It’s not close.)

But I’ve had a few days to sit with everything Sony showed off, and honestly? Kailangan ko itong pag-usapan sa inyo, kasi hindi ito karaniwang State of Play.

For those who missed it entirely — Sony didn’t just do one show this time. They ran a regular State of Play and then, immediately after, a second one called State of Play Japan, hosted by Yuki Kaji, focused entirely on Japanese and Asian developers. Combined, we’re talking over 30 games in under two hours. Sobrang haba, pero worth it naman.

Here’s what actually stuck with me — not a copy-paste list of every single trailer, but the stuff that made me put my coffee down.

The Opening Was… a Movie Trailer?

Weird choice, but I respect it. Instead of jumping straight into a game reveal, the show opened with a clip from the upcoming Resident Evil movie — directed by Zach Cregger, the guy behind Weapons and Barbarian. It’s a retelling of the RE2 outbreak in Raccoon City, and the footage they showed genuinely looked unsettling in a way live-action Resident Evil hasn’t managed before. Premieres September 18.

Was I expecting a movie trailer to open a PlayStation game showcase? No. Did it work as an attention grabber? Also no, kind of — pero interesting choice pa rin, at malamang effective ito for the horror crowd.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation — This Is the One Everyone Was Waiting For

Let’s be real, this was the reason most of us tuned in (or in my case, watched three days late). Square Enix closed out the first show with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third and final chapter of the Remake trilogy. And they finally gave us a release date: April 8, 2027.

I’ll admit, when the footage showed Sephiroth’s face clearly for the first time in this game, may kilig factor talaga. Say what you want about how long this trilogy has taken — we’re closing out a story that started back in 2020 — but the gameplay they showed, especially the open-world traversal using the Highwind airship, looked genuinely massive. You apparently get access to it early, which should make exploring the world less of a slog than Rebirth sometimes was.

April 2027 feels far. Pero after everything, ano pa ba ang isang taon?

Marvel’s Wolverine Got Its Final Trailer Before Launch

This one hits different for me personally — I grew up on X-Men cartoons, and Wolverine has always been my favorite because, let’s be honest, sino ba ang hindi gustong magkaroon ng adamantium claws? Insomniac dropped a final trailer before the game’s September 15 launch, and it was a proper highlight reel — Jean Grey, Sentinels, Sabertooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, and Bolivar Trask all showed up in some capacity.

The bad news, as we’ve talked about before on this site — PS5 exclusive lang ito. Walang PC port sa ngayon. If you’ve been holding off on a PS5 purchase, September 15 might finally be the push you need. Or the excuse your wallet was dreading, depende sa pananaw mo.

Until Dawn 2 — The Sequel Nobody Expected, But Everyone Wants

Until Dawn 2 got a second trailer, building on its surprise reveal from earlier this year. I haven’t played the original Until Dawn in years, pero I remember staying up way too late finishing it with my cousin, both of us screaming every time a choice mattered. If this sequel captures even half of that energy, sulit na.

No release date yet, sadly. Pero abangan natin ito.

Keeper — A Sentient Lighthouse Game, and I’m Not Mad About It

Here’s a fun one. Double Fine — the studio behind Psychonauts — just went independent from Xbox, and their first move as a free agent was partnering with PlayStation. Their new game, Keeper, is about a sentient, mobile lighthouse on a journey of discovery. It’s available right now on PS5.

I’ll admit I laughed a little reading the concept, pero that’s exactly the kind of weird, heartfelt indie energy Double Fine has always brought. Kung fan ka ng mga game na hindi kailangang magpaputok ng baril para maging maganda, subukan mo ito.

Metro 2039 Finally Has a Release Date

For fans of the Metro series, this one’s a big deal. A new gameplay trailer, shot on PS5 Pro, showed off a tense shootout inside an apartment building — and Metro 2039 now has a confirmed release date of February 4, 2027.

Wala akong masyadong masasabi dito kundi — ang ganda ng lighting sa footage. Malamang mag-iwan ito ng malaking impact sa mga PC gamers rin once it eventually lands there.

The State of Play Japan Segment Was, Honestly, the More Interesting Half

If I’m being completely honest with you — as someone who’s been covering games for a while now — the second show, State of Play Japan, had more surprises packed into it than the main broadcast.

A few things worth mentioning:

Konami showed off Rev. Noir, an anime-inspired action RPG following a boy named Asch trying to stop a catastrophe called the lightfall. Konami also revealed Rhapsody in Scarlet — a jazzy adventure set in 1920s New York, starring a young magus named Ellie Myers who has to stop a threat to the entire world. The aesthetic alone — 1920s jazz age meets magic — is something I haven’t seen done well in games before. Curious talaga ako dito.

Monster Hunter Wilds got a new expansion trailer for something called Ascendance, launching in 2027 — heavy on story, with plenty of new gameplay footage mixed in.

And in a genuinely unexpected turn — Maneater 2 was confirmed. Yes, the shark RPG. This time your shark protagonist is trying to escape a luxury resort/theme park called Neptune’s Kingdom. Launches in 2027. Wala akong masabi kundi — okay, sige, Maneater 2, bakit hindi.

The Small Stuff That Made Me Smile

Not everything needs a full section, pero worth a quick mention:

• PlayStation and LEGO are releasing a LEGO set modeled after the original PlayStation console — complete with a tiny controller and memory cards. Goes on sale December for $179.99. Bibili ako nito, hindi ko na itatanggi.
• PS Plus Classics Catalog is getting Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2, and the original Ratchet & Clank later this year.
• Mycopunk, a co-op looter shooter, is joining PS Plus Game Catalog sometime in 2026.

My Honest Take

Dalawang oras ang haba ng buong showcase, at hindi ko itatanggi na medyo pagod ako nung tapos na. Pero looking back at everything — FF7 Revelation finally getting its date, Wolverine closing out its marketing push, at yung mga surprise mula sa Japan show — this was one of the stronger State of Plays Sony has put out in a while.

Wala man dito ang God of War Laufey o Intergalactic na inaasahan ng marami — kaya siguro may susunod pang showcase bago matapos ang taon. Pero para sa akin, sapat na ang na-announce nila ngayon para pag-usapan natin ito sa mga susunod na linggo.

Ano sa inyo ang pinaka-excited? Kung tanungin niyo ako, ako personally naghihintay pa rin sa FF7 Revelation — pero yung Keeper, yung lighthouse game na iyon, may something dun na hindi ko maalis sa isip ko. Baka ako lang, but I’ll take weird and heartfelt over another shooter any day.
