TL;DR: Snake: Gridbreaker, the action roguelite from Polish solo developer Arkadiusz Włodarczyk, is now in Steam Early Access. It takes the Snake you played on your old phone and turns it into a run-based roguelite with classes, builds and cursed mutations. The developer expects it to stay in Early Access for around 12 to 18 months. Price on Steam: ₱119.20.
We first wrote about this one last week, back when it only had a free demo. Arkadiusz actually found PGN through our Filipino Dama story, and now his game is officially out. Para sa lahat ng na-hook sa Snake sa Nokia noon, this is your sign.
Same snake, very different rules
The basics are still there: eat, grow longer, don’t crash into yourself. But in Gridbreaker, you’re trapped in a living grid that adapts, surrounds you and tries to pull you back in. Every run is an attempt to break out before the Grid closes in.
Instead of just surviving, you build. Arkadiusz describes runs built around head attacks, tail effects, shields or movement. Cursed mutations give you big power at a real cost. And just like the original, your own growing body is the thing most likely to trap you. Hindi na lang basta kain ng apple.
The game also has snake classes that twist the formula in different ways:
- Phase through forbidden paths
- Chain speed
- Build around greed
- Survive with armor
What Early Access means here
According to the Steam page, the current version is already a playable arcade roguelite. Some content, balancing, polish and platform testing are still in progress. Arkadiusz wants player feedback on pacing, difficulty, build variety, readability, controls and long-term progression. For the full release, he plans to improve difficulty pacing, build variety, controller support, Steam Deck readiness and late-run content.
The Steam listing also shows a thoughtful feature set for a one-person project: full controller support, Steam leaderboards and achievements, Steam Workshop, adjustable difficulty, adjustable text size, color alternatives, and a “playable without timed input” tag.
Arkadiusz also notes on Steam that generative AI was one of many tools he used while making the game. For a solo developer, that kind of help can mean more time for the parts players actually feel, like balancing and polish, and getting a full roguelite out the door faster.
Should you jump in?
If you like quick runs that you can squeeze into a lunch break, this is an easy one to recommend checking out. Early Access is also the best time to shape a game, since Arkadiusz is actively asking for feedback. Grab it on Steam.
