AMD Radeon GPU Names Explained: What RX, XT, GRE, M and S Really Mean

TL;DR: AMD’s current graphics cards follow a simple pattern once you know it. “RX 9070 XT” means a dedicated Radeon gaming GPU (RX), from the 9000 generation, in the 70 tier, in its faster XT version. On laptops, watch out: if there’s no “RX” in the name, like Radeon 890M or Radeon 8060S, that’s integrated graphics built into the processor, not a separate graphics card.

Last week we broke down NVIDIA’s RTX 50 names. As promised, Team Red naman. Kung naguluhan ka na sa spec sheet sa mall o sa isang online listing, this one’s for you.

Decoding “Radeon RX 9070 XT”

Let’s take AMD’s top card right now and break it apart:

The current desktop lineup

Here’s the RX 9000 family, from entry-level up, with US launch prices:

The newest card is the RX 9050, which arrived in July as AMD’s cheapest RDNA 4 option for 1080p gaming. Good news for us: AMD launched it first in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America, before North America or Europe.

Expect higher shelf prices here once taxes and shipping kick in.

Notice what’s missing: there’s no RX 9080 or RX 9090 on desktop. AMD aimed this generation at mid-range performance and value instead of fighting NVIDIA at the very top. When it launched the RX 9070 cards, AMD lined them up against NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti. So if you’re eyeing RTX 5080 or 5090-level power, wala pang direct AMD rival this generation. And if you’re thinking of waiting for AMD’s next generation, a recent leak claims its RDNA 5 cards likely won’t be revealed before Computex 2027.

Same name, different memory

This one catches a lot of buyers. The RX 9060 XT comes in 8GB and 16GB versions under the exact same name, with a $50 gap at launch. Newer games at higher settings eat up video memory fast, so the 16GB version gives you more breathing room.

The RX 9050 has the same problem in prebuilt PCs. The retail card has 8GB, but AMD also makes a 4GB version with half the memory bandwidth that’s only sold inside prebuilt systems, under the same RX 9050 name. If you’re buying a prebuilt, make sure the spec sheet says 8GB. Basahin muna ang specs bago mag-checkout.

So what’s GRE?

The RX 9070 GRE sits between the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070, with 12GB of memory. It started as a China-only card in May 2025 and went worldwide on June 1, 2026. Think of it as a cut-down RX 9070 at a lower tier.

Laptops: M, S, and the “no RX” trap

This is where it gets tricky, so read slowly:

Leaks back in 2025 pointed to RDNA 4 laptop chips like an RX 9080M and RX 9070M XT, but we haven’t seen AMD officially launch them. Historically, AMD’s dedicated laptop GPUs have only appeared in a handful of laptops, so most Ryzen laptops you’ll see use either NVIDIA graphics or AMD’s integrated graphics.

And here’s the trap. AMD’s integrated graphics also use M and S, minus the RX:

The rule of thumb: no “RX” means integrated graphics. It’s part of the processor and shares the laptop’s RAM instead of having its own video memory.

Integrated isn’t useless, though. The Radeon 890M performs close to a GTX 1650 laptop GPU and can run 2024 AAA games at 1080p on mostly low settings. The Radeon 8060S is much stronger, scoring roughly double the 890M in benchmark averages. Hindi masama, pero iba ‘yon sa dedicated GPU.

Bonus: FSR 4 and FSR 4.1

RX 9000 cards support FSR 4, AMD’s AI-powered upscaler that boosts frame rates by rendering at a lower resolution and sharpening the result. It started as an RX 9000 exclusive, but AMD brought it to RX 7000 cards on June 22, 2026.

Then on October 20, AMD rolled out FSR 4.1 to RX 6000 cards and to Ryzen AI 9 and Ryzen AI Max processors, which means integrated graphics like the 890M and 8060S get it too. That’s a nice free boost for budget laptop gamers. Just update to the latest AMD Software driver.
